I teach a University capstone course, and as a result, I dictate the word "capstone" often. However, it sounds very similar to the command "Caps On"

I've done Tools> Vocabulary Editor >Train a time or two withou much improvement. Is there a better approach I can take for this particular word? (The rest of my recognition is good, Im happy with it.)

Would it be beneficial to train several more times? Should I also train "Caps on"?
Thoughts anyone?

I have just bought and installed the software on my MacBook Pro version 10.6.4 and I cannot use scribe at all. Each time I try and start the app it says

"MacSpeech Scribe has detected and deleted damaged profiles."

Then when it tries to create a profile, it crashes every single time and an automatic error email gets sent to this company.

I'm furious and can't understand what is going on. This software is so expensive and there's not one person I can talk to on the phone about it. I feel like I just threw away almost 200 bucks, as I had to even pay for the disc to get sent to me, because I bought the down-loadable version.

Hi folks,

Am trying to dictate references to specific spinal levels, and whilst most are transcribed correctly a few are not, and refuse to be corrected. They include the phrase "T12", which always is transcribed as "T .12".

I've tried using the Vocab editor with no success (the expression T12 is trained successfully, but never appears as an option in the Recognition window. (Have also tried the other correction/training options with no success).

If any of you have brought the microphone, please could you let me know if it works. At this point in time I am using a microphone that I have brought and it seems to be working well, but I would like to have a wireless enabled me to have more freedom with dictating.
If anybody knows of a microphone that is wireless furthermore, that works please let me know.

Donkeyoatay on "Purge the Cache!"

Can some knowledgeable user please confirm the "Purge Cache" command. I have read and re read the MSD Manual relating to purging cache but am still confused. The manual states..

"When you say Purge Cache, it’s like doing just the first half of a Cache
Document command: MacSpeech Dictate forgets what it entered in this
document, and doesn’t read the document. It just assumes the document is
empty."

Say for example I dictate a couple of paragraphs in TextEdit, then give the command "Purge Cache". From the above information given in the manual, I would imagine that the text I have just dictated would not be affected by whatever command I would then dictate.

I have tried this a few times, and after giving the command "Purge Cache" there is no restriction whatsoever on the text I have just typed. Although the command shows up in the Recognition window I am still able to edit the text as before I gave the purge command.

Is there something I am missing here or is it normal to be still able to edit text that has just been purged? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Michael.

I seem to have no end of bother with headsets. Previously, I have owned two Andrea models; a NC181 and an NC185. Both of these worked excellently until each at quite different times started to develop an annoying hum through the microphone, which made usage useless. In desperation I bought a Logitech USB headset, which works really well, with high input levels, except in carelessly getting it out of my travel bag I ripped one of the headphones out of its socket. I can still dictate with it flawlessly but it looks very odd with a damaged headsets.

Feeling brave, and having consulted the company's site I decided to “upgrade” to a VXI Talkpro Xpress. I have had it for two days, and I am most disappointed. The major problem is that the input level is so low, I have the microphone input level adjustment at 100% and I'm only just getting enough green above the red on the monitor gauge when I talk very loud to get it to work, and it seems as though the signal to noise ratio is not brilliant enough to give me good dictation. I understand though I need to persist, and train the thing, and shout louder. However, in desperation in order to type this I have gone back to my old daggy looking but sort of functional logitech.

How can I increase the sound level input on the VXI? this is annoying as I have just spent over $200 expecting on get top of the range quality.

Hi,

I'm a long-time user of NaturallySpeaking (ever since the program was first released, and Dragon Dictate prior to that). I just purchased MacSpeech Dictate because my wife similarly just purchased a brand-new iMac. I wanted to give the Mac-based version of voice recognition a try.

Anyways... I have the following question as it relates to correcting and editing:

I usually dictate an entire e-mail/letter, for instance, then I go back and edit/correct any incorrect guesses on NaturallySpeaking's part.

So when it comes to MacSpeech Dictate, let me see if I have got this correction and/or editing process straight:

1.

If there is a particular word that has been incorrectly guessed by the underlying speech engine, I utter the Command phrase "Select the word ____”. This brings up the Recognition window (I have it set to automatically be brought up in the Preferences section of the program).

2.

Within the Recognition window, everything is displayed in phrases, not individual words. (This is very different from the interface of NaturallySpeaking, which only shows the individual word choices as alternatives to what the program originally guessed.)

If there is a correct alternative listed within the Recognition window, I can simply say "Choose ____” in association with the number that represents the correct utterance.

3.

But if there is no correct alternative, I have to say "Edit ____” in association with the phrase I wish to edit. Then, I have to either manually type the difference, or I have to switch to the Spell mode and spell it out that way, after individually selecting the incorrect text...?

Doesn't all of this seem overly cumbersome...?

Is there a simpler, faster, easier way to correct/edit...???

It's like who was ever coming up with the basic procedures for correction and/or editing included extra and unnecessary steps instead of streamlining.

Nuance has currently a new advert on British TV advertising Dragon Naturally Speaking. It is quite impressive showing someone jumping out of a plane and at the same time dictating to a female on the ground who is reading the dictation on her lap top. She then dictates replies and gives further commands.

I thought that MacSpeech International would be perfect but as far as I can see, the manual is only in English and I have no idea on how to find out how the commands are translated in French or German. Trial and error has allowed me to find some, but this is very annoying.

Isn't there like a glossary? A simple table listing the commands in every language would be extremely useful.

As long as I've had MacSpeech Dictate, I've encountered frequent bogus with the Commands, including the following:

-When I click on “User Defined” it still shows all commands
-Frequently, there are exclamation points next to the built-in commands
-There are frequent crashes anytime I try to add commands
-When I select the type as “Menu Item” for a command and try to use the path in Apple's Mail program Message > Move To > [Folder], most of the mail folders do not appear. This particular problem seems to be new in MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.9, because many of my old “move to folder” commands still work even though they no longer appear as options.

I'm using MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.9 on a 2010 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.4. This occurs when I have neither Java-based applications nor virtual machines running. Twice, I've completely reinstalled MacSpeech Dictate following the directions I received from MacSpeech support staff. Multiple times I've deleted my preferences file and tried to restart MacSpeech Dictate.

Any advice for me?

I have tried all the suggestions I have found on the forums and they are still duplicated. Worse, the program has recently slowed way down with about a 10 second delay between dictating and transcribing.

The setup: Dictate Medical 1.5.9 on a MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core Duo running 10.6.4 and using a plantronics DSP 55 USB mic.

Hi, new Scribe International user here.

Is there a keyboard shortcut in Scribe International for selecting the alternative transcriptions in the sidebar of the transcription window? Command+1... springs to mind. I have read the manual and tried a bunch of keys, but none of them work. It seems like a no-brainer to speed up editing, since there are keyboard shortcuts for all other actions I may take when editing, from playing back audio to saving a file, this is the one I am missing.

If there isn't a keyboard shortcut, is there a way to create one, using Automator, Applescript or the keyboard system preference panel?

Regards,

Hi,

In the manual it says: "MacSpeech Scribe thinks in utterances, so you can speak in utterances... Speak in utterances, but make each utterance natural and smooth."

I do this, but often the transcription will be chunked in such a way that words are split, and therefore the transcription is inaccurate, as it doesn't recognise the words properly. This happens in places where I definitely didn't pause mid-word. Is there maybe a maximum length of a chunk that Scribe can handle before it cuts off transcription? I try to pause in sensible places in my sentences, but that Scribe seems to break rather randomly.

Any ideas why this might happen?

(As an aside, is there any reason that I can't copy and paste from the manual? When I select text, all I get is this: ␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣ instead of text)

Is it possible to set a default profile in Scribe International? I can't find any preferences at all, and the profile window doesn't let me set a default that always opens when I start the program. Having to choose a default profile is just another unnecessary step IMO.

Am I missing something?

I may be suggesting features of Scribe - but I would hugely love a type of Back End recognition whereby there will be a backup copy on audio that either myself or a secretary can check.
Finally on this Scribe point, what I would love is an audio record of what I said that I can keep for records and that the secretary or myself can use to check what I said. Now I think that this is what Macspeech Scribe is, but despite reading the site over and over, I'm not quite certain what it does.
Can I keep the files - can I replay them? Moreover I don't know from the site onto what do I record the data? - do I record it into macspeech scribe running on the computer?, with the headset?, or are there USB Dictaphones I can use?

Scribe transcribes from recorded dictation. You record your dictation elsewhere (in another application, an iPhone app, or on a digital voice recorder), and save it or transfer it on your Mac as an audio file. The audio file formats Scribe accepts are .wav, .aif, .aiff, .m4a, .m4v, and .mp4. It does need to be a single speaker's high-quality speech/dictation -- multi-voice audio is not supported, such as interviews, movie dialog, phone conversations, etc.

Many users of Scribe use a digital voice recorder-- one which can transfer your recorded dictation to your Mac as an audio file in one of these formats.

As it turns out, an iPhone or an iPod touch (with attached mic) work great as "digital voice recorders". Use the Voice Memos app, or a 3rd party app such as Griffin iTalk or Dictamus.

Scribe is not a recording application. But you can also record your voice dictation directly on your Mac, in a number of programs (QuickTime Player, GarageBand, or a number of 3rd party Mac applications).

And/or...since you are working with recorded audio files, you could alternately send your recorded dictation to your secretary, who would run Scribe on his/her Mac to transcribe them.

I cannot figure out how much medical scribe is - is it more expensive or cheaper than regular scribe ?

Scribe Medical is included as part of the MacSpeech Dictate Medical 1.5 package.

There is a cross-grade from Dictate (standard) to Dictate Medical (including Scribe Medical).

I'm trying to create commands for Aperture, and ran across a somewhat interesting problem. I wrote the following script in script editor:

tell application "Aperture"
activate
set isfs to (get fullscreen)
if isfs is false then
set fullscreen to true
else
set fullscreen to false
end if
end tell

This works great in the script editor environment, but when the same code is used as a command from Dictate, nothing happens. This is not a huge problem, as it is easy enough to simply use hotkeys instead of AppleScript, but I find myself wondering if it is indicative of a deeper problem in dictates implementation of AppleScript.

MacOS X 10.6.4
Dictate 1.5.7
Aperture 3.0.3

Have been using Medical for many months in my office and feel compelled to state the true facts. The program is nearly unusable most of the time secondary to multiple spelling mistakes, word mistakes. Have trained my voice to the point of hoarseness. Using MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.3 (10D573), Calista mic. I had used Dragon for several years in Windows and later with Parallels on a Mac. This program reminds me of the early days of Dragon (ver 7, 8). Very unsatisfying, very frustrating, and just plain unworkable. The program does not allow a combination of speech and keyboard. Therefore, you sit there saying the word over and over again in an effort to "teach" the program. Painful!!! Dragon would be wise to start over and do something with this program before the Mac faithful freak out and run. Painful experience with no improvement from version to version. I absolutely will not recommend this product in its current form to anyone other than those that have hours of time to waste.

I'm a new user and was quite excited about the software and its ability. Alas, the love affair is wearing off!

Trying to use this to dictate medical notes in an internal medicine type setting. Anyone have any tips?

In particular, I find that I'm always starting every note from scratch and having to make similar edits on each note. Also, other than templates for heading and a few macros, the whole process fails to be gaining speed...which is what I hoped.

Thanks

The transcription is amazingly good, however the "play" button at the bottom of the recognition pane doesn't work--nothing happens. Also, when I pick the best alternative phrase and click the number, it replaces the whole transcription. Since that is not what I wanted, I press command-Z, and the transcript comes back with the alternative phrase now at the end. This is not what I wanted, either, so I select the alternative phrase and delete. I can make corrections in the transcript, but it's deadly slow, with the cursor spinning while the correction is registered. What am I doing wrong?
